The house was built for the Maes family, who were exporter/importers in Santa Fe. After the Mexican-American War, the Maes moved south to help found Mesilla as a permanent settlement. This was the largest house ever built in Mesilla. With such a large house, they had many servants. One of the servants was a teenage girl named Inez. The oldest son of the Maes, Armando, feel in love with Inez. Senora Maes fired Inez, snet her from their home & forbade Armando from ever seeing her again. He continued seeing her. On day Senora Inez came home early & found Inez & Armandoin his bedroom. She was outraged & grabbed a large pair of scissors. She attacked Inez, killing her & accidentally stabbed her son. He spoke one word, "Inez" & fell into a coma. He died 3 days later
