Old Mesilla, Las Cruces, NM
The plaza surrounded by the adobe building of Old Mesilla. Don Juan de Onate visited Mesilla in 1598 looking for converts & gold for the King of Spain. From 1862 to 1884, Mesilla was an island, with the Rio Grand having channels on both sides of the town. The east channel ran between Mesilla & the old Spanish burial site called Las Cruces because of an area of white crosses. The first inhabitants were the Anazazi.
